Good goalkeeper training doesnβt just mean facing as many shots on goal as possible. Especially in youth development, the quality of training determines how a keeper's technique, decision-making, and self-confidence evolve.
Our coaches see the same mistakes over and over again. Weβll show you 5 typical mistakes in youth training β and how keepers can do better.

1. TOO MUCH ACTION, NOT ENOUGH TECHNIQUE
Spectacular saves are fun β but they are not the foundation of good goalkeeper training. If basic movements, catching techniques, or the correct body position are not mastered properly, bad habits creep in that are difficult to correct later on.
π COACH TIP: First execute the movement with proper technique, then increase the speed, distance, and difficulty.
2. ALWAYS TRAINING ONLY ON THE LINE
A modern goalkeeper is no longer just responsible for stopping shots on the goal line. Defending space, starting play, dealing with crosses, communication, and footwork are just as important.
π COACH TIP: Regularly incorporate game situations into training where keepers have to make decisions β not just saves.
3. TOO MANY REPETITIONS WITHOUT FEEDBACK
Saving 20 balls in a row is of little use if no one is paying attention to how the movement is being executed. Quality beats quantity.
π COACH TIP: It is better to have fewer repetitions but provide targeted feedback between actions. Small corrections can make a big difference in the long run.
4. TRAINING WITHOUT REGARD FOR AGE AND ABILITY
A 9-year-old keeper needs different training stimuli than a 16-year-old. Simply adopting exercises from the adult or professional level is therefore not automatically useful.
π COACH TIP: Adapt exercises to the age, physical development, and performance level. Technique and coordination skills form the basis, especially for young keepers.
5. MISTAKES ARE VIEWED AS SOMETHING NEGATIVE
Anyone afraid of making a mistake will hardly develop in goal. Young keepers in particular need to experiment, make decisions, and be allowed to get it wrong sometimes.
π COACH TIP: Don't just judge the result of an action. Much more important is the question: Was the decision right? Was the technique correct? And what can we do better next time?

GOOD GOALKEEPER TRAINING NEEDS A PLAN.
That is precisely why we at GOALKEEPING.COM work with structured training content and clear development priorities. In our NEXT ONE training programs and goalkeeper camps, young keepers train specifically on technique, athleticism, decision-making, and the demands of the modern goalkeeper game.
