1. Ivan Benko: From player to coach – A passion for goalkeeping
Ivan, please introduce yourself briefly: Who are you, where do you come from and how did you get into goalkeeping?
My name is Ivan Benko , and I'm originally from Zagreb, Croatia . Goalkeeping fascinated me from a young age – the responsibility and unique nature of the position immediately captivated me. From the moment I first stood in goal, I knew: This is where I belong.
2. The path to becoming a goalkeeping coach: A key moment in Greece
What was your personal journey as a goalkeeping coach? Was there a key moment that inspired you to take this path?
After my professional career, which took me through Croatia, England, Greece, and Austria , I naturally transitioned into coaching. The decisive moment came during my time in Greece – there I began working with young goalkeepers at the academy and discovered my passion for teaching and development. Helping others grow – on and off the pitch – became a true calling for me.
3. Coaching positions: From OFI Crete to the IB Goalkeeping Academy
What positions have you held as a goalkeeping coach so far? At which clubs or academies have you worked?
My coaching career began at OFI Crete in Greece, where I worked within the academy system. After returning to Croatia, I became a goalkeeping coach at the NK Lokomotiva Zagreb academy, where I continue to develop young talent. In parallel, I founded my own goalkeeping school – the IB Goalkeeping Academy – through which I offer individual and small group training, as well as online mentoring.

What licenses or training courses have you completed in the field of goalkeeper training? How important is professional development for coaches to you?
